What I Wish I Had Known Before Starting University

Hey there guys,

Hope everyone is well and safe. With this whole Coronavirus pandemic going on around us, I have noticed that so many people have been make blog posts related to the pandemic e.g. how I study during the pandemic? I on the other hand have decided to go for something a little different. If you do want a pandemic related post, just let me know in the comments. It is highly likely that I will be doing one in the near future but if you let me know that you want one, then I will make sure to get one up sooner rather than later.
So, let's get into this post...
1. FRESHER'S FLU IS REAL!
So this is my first point and it is in capital letters because it is very very important. Before I started university, I did my homework. I asked cousins and friends who were already at university what it was like and I also did my research online and they all said the same thing. FRESHER'S FLU IS REAL!
Did I believe them? No! Did I get fresher's flu? Sure did.
Woman in Blue Sweater Lying on BedEven if you don't go out much during fresher's - I didn't - you still get fresher's flu. It is inevitable. I believe it has something to do with the fact that you're around so many new people and you share kitchens, communal areas, maybe even bathrooms and bedrooms. One thing I recommend is take vitamin C tablets. I myself didn't but I have friends that did and they got the flu but didn't get it as bad. As I said, fresher's flu is inevitable.
One way which I got over it was Cold and Flu medication. I used a supermarket brand  and so it took me a while to get over it. Also, steaming with some sort of oil in the water, maybe eucalyptus, can help as it clears your blocked nose.
2. Fresher's Week May Not Be As Amazing As You Thought It Would Be.
People Dancing Inside Dim RoomThis point is just as important as my first point. People see Fresher's week as the best week of their lives, and it can be, but don't worry if it's not.
I only went out twice maybe three times during Fresher's week. They were okay nights out but they were by no means amazing. Why was this? Well the people I went out with during Fresher's week, weren't the people I became best friends with. They were my flatmates and whilst we became friends, we weren't super close. Also, during Fresher's you are just starting to get to know a new town and new people so I wasn't totally myself, I was a tad bit uncomfortable and I was anxious.
I made my friends after Fresher's week. It is a lot easier to socialise with people once the whole hype of Fresher's week is over. Also you are in a better frame of mind because you are more open and less stressed. If you are still really stressed... I will have a post up soon on how I de-stress at uni soon. It will be available here.
3. It's Okay To Not Be A Big Drinker.
When I started university I had only just turned 18 and had only been clubbing once. I wasn't much of a drinker, but that was because I didn't have the opportunity.
When I got to university, I didn't drink very much. Maybe one or two gins throughout the whole of Fresher's and at my uni we had a fortnight of Fresher's. No one made a big deal about me not drinking and no one pressured me into doing so. They would ask if I wanted a drink but I never felt pressured to drink.

Since Freshers, I have become more of a drinker but still, I drink a lot less than the average student. Maybe a double every night out and a shot if I'm up for it. I'm crazy without alcohol - as my friends well know - and I can have fun without it and so I don't drink much.
People around you will most likely be drinking if you've gone to a bar or pub but there are many other activities at university where people don't drink. To list a few; societies - they may have socials but you don't have to go to them if you don't want to, movie nights in with friends or even cooking with friends.
My friends and I do all of the above. We have joined different societies, some of us have been to socials, we have had many movie nights in - where no alcohol has been involved and we have cooked together for each other.
To put it simply, you don't need to drink at university and don't worry if you don't drink!
4. People Are Not Clean!
In my accommodation my flat was all girls. I had asked to be put in a mixed flat but ended up with all girls. Before I moved in I figured that was a good thing since we would all be a lot cleaner. Sorry to all the boys reading this but in my experience, you guys are the messier sex.
Black and White Remote Control on TableBut no!
Don't expect your flat to be clean. It will be a mess at some point. My flat was regularly a mess. The kitchen - which was our one communal area - was filthy 90% of the time. You will probably have at least one person in your flat who will not clean. That one person who will not take the bins out. That one person who will not do their dishes. You can try to get them to do it.. ask nicely and all that and hopefully they will, but you'll probably be taking out the bins more times than the rota says you will.
5. MEAL PREP! MEAL PREP! MEAL PREP!
I started with an important one and I am going to end with an even more important one. Make sure you meal prep from the very first day that you start uni.
Variety of DishesIf you have one day off a week or one afternoon a week, make sure you cook one or two meals that will last a few days. You can put them in the freezer and then just defrost and eat once you're ready.
I didn't do this... and I regret it so much! I put on weight because I was always eating random meals at random times. I also bugged my friends all the time. I would go to theirs for dinner all the time because I hadn't cooked and I finished uni late and I had no time to cook but I was hungry.
Long story short... MEAL PREP!
Anyway... there we go! I hope you enjoyed this post and let me know what you want to see in the future. At the moment I am trying to figure out a posting schedule but once I have one, I will let you guys know. How many times a week would you like a blog post?
